LINNC (Live Interventional Neuroradiology & Neurosurgery Course) Paris 2018

Monday, 11 June, 2018 - Wednesday, 13 June, 2018

Dr Alberto Marzo from the Insigneo Institute for in silico Medicine is attending LINNC (Live Interventional Neuroradiology & Neurosurgery Course) Paris 2018 from 11 – 13 June to demonstrate how computer modelling has helped identify why stent treatment of brain aneurysms sometimes fails.

Patients suffering from brain aneurysms (abnormal bulging of a blood vessel) are treated with a procedure (stenting) that sometimes leads to the dangerous obstruction of arteries. Dr Marzo, in collaboration with the University Hospital of Tours, led a team of researchers to investigate whether this was related to the way blood flows in vessels of a certain anatomy or geometry. They used their computer models to mimic blood flow in arteries and through stents, and found that there might be a physiological reason for the occasional failure of flow-diverting stent treatment in some vascular geometries, linked to alterations in blood flow.

The study identified important cause-effect mechanisms and significant associations with blood vessel anatomy which can guide treatment, reduce risk and extend use of a minimally invasive procedure that, before this study, was associated with the possibility of complications.

The clinicians involved in the study have started using the associations identified in the study to guide their clinical interventions

Dr Marzo will disseminate the results of this study to an international audience of neuroradiologists and neurosurgeons using virtual reality tablets. This will enable the exploration of the effect of deploying a flow diverter stent on blood flow in a patient-specific model.

This research was supported by the Newton Collaboration Programme and carried out through a collaboration with a Consultant Neuroradiologist from Tours (France), Dr Ana Paula Narata, a Lecturer from Universidade Federal do ABC (Sao Paulo, Brazil), Dr. Fernando Moura, a Researcher from Argentina, Dr. Nacho Larrabide, Dr Alberto Marzo (Mech Eng) his PhD student Alessandro Melis, Dr Cécile Perrault and Paul Watton from UK, and Stryker as industrial partner.

The LINNC Paris 2018 event, which takes place 11 – 13 June 2018, is an important opportunity for clinicians to share experience and improve their daily practice. The programme focusses on neurovascular malformations and includes viewing of live cases, treated in real-time under real conditions, broadcast from around the world from followed by a discussion of the challenges and techniques involved.

The first two days will focus on neurovascular malformations: along with inspiring lectures, you will be able to see LIVE cases, treated in real-time under real conditions by some of the most experienced colleagues in the world, broadcasted from the four corners of the earth by the LINNC Live Centers … and then discuss the challenges and techniques involved!

The last day, made up of challenging recorded cases, lectures and round tables, will be dedicated to one of the most topical subjects: stroke management!

Prepare yourself for LINNC Paris 2018, the perfect opportunity to discuss the latest techniques and issues in Interventional NeuroRadiology and NeuroSurgery, and to meet a vibrant community of neuroradiologists and neurosurgeons dedicated to advance our practice and to achieve the best clinical outcomes for our patients.
