Fluid dynamics in aortic diseases: engineering tools towards personalized patient management.

The management of patients with aortic diseases remains controversial. An aortic aneurysm -a dilation of the aortic diameter- is a symptomless condition that progresses undetected until the aorta tears, causing a dissection. Those diagnosed live under the constant threat of the aorta tearing. Despite the severity of the condition, current guidelines only include the rudimentary measurement of the maximum diameter and its growth rate as criteria to replace the diseased aorta with a synthetic graft.

In our engineering group, in collaboration with physicians, physicists and mathematicians, we are developing novel fluid dynamic markers that could predict aneurysm progression and risk of rupture. Using cutting-edge fluid-structure interaction simulations, we have been able to detect patients at risk, independently of their aortic diameter. We are now building in vitro replicas of the aorta to observe the mechanotransduction of these fluid dynamic markers in human aortic endothelial cells.
