It is with great sadness that we learn of the passing of Professor Stephen C. Cowin who died on 19 October 2016.
Professor Cowin had a career that spanned over 50 years and was a recognized figure for his pioneering research in the mechanics of materials, skeletal biomechanics and granular materials amongst many other topics of interest.
A highly regarded scientist, Professor Cowin was honored on numerous occasions receiving the Melville Medal from the ASME, the Honorary Lifetime Member Award by the International Society for Porous Media as well as being elected into the US National Academy of Engineering.
Marco Viceconti, Executive Director at Insigneo Institute for in silico medicine said: “Steve was one of the most influential biomechanics of his generation and I remember him fondly. So long, gentle giant. I spent most of my career standing on your shoulders.”
